A little about the group's history

It was during Lent in 2006 that the group started, due to the encouragement of our new vicar, The Revd John Hill who had just joined us in the parish in the previous October of 2005. Quite a large group of parishioners started meeting on Monday nights in John and Wendy's home. As the group was quite large, we divided into two smaller groups meeting in different rooms of the house. At the start of the night we would all squeeze into the one room for some orientation and ‘getting to know one another better' time, which was valuable time spent in a more relaxed atmosphere outside of the parish setting. After this we divided into the smaller groups to undertake our Lenten study of that year, which was a study of The Purpose-Driven Life, written by Rick Warren. The theme of the book dealt with the question ‘what on earth am I here for?', and was structured to be undertaken over a period of 40 days (40 Days of Purpose).

As a group it was felt that everyone enjoyed doing the study, which asked many questions of us about our lives. It was thought-provoking and challenging, and gave plenty of opportunity for both groups to discuss and talk about our own personal lives. Many in the group felt secure enough to share about sensitive issues in their life.

Home group went into a few weeks of recess after Lent, but recommenced again later in the year. A small number of people then started meeting regularly on the Monday nights in the one room of the house, which was easier for interaction between all group members. For the next few months we undertook looking at the Psalms, doing one Psalm each week. Each week we would share the leadership of the group amongst the various members.

In the Lent of 2007 we undertook the study of the book, a Generous Orhodoxy by Brian D. McLaren. This was a very challenging study, thought-provoking and seemed a little unconventional to some in the group.

Since this year's Lenten study a core number in the group have continued meeting regularly, and we have been enjoying a study of 2 Corinthians.

Members of the group have strengthened their relationships with each other. There is a real feeling of closeness and support. We share prayer requests with each other, and also pray for many of the needs in the parish as a whole. There is very much a feeling of trust, and integrity. Sensitive personal issues that we discuss with each other are shared within the group, and most importantly they are not discussed outside of the group setting.

Each evening that we meet, we conclude with a lovely supper together sharing in the delights which are provided by various members. This is a lovely and special time of fellowship together.
